In an article for the LinkedIn Official Blog, Tomer Cohen, Chief Product Officer at LinkedIn, shares some of the current workplace trends as predicted by several experts and leaders on the platform. 

Tomer says the past year has taught us that businesses need to be prepared for continued volatility and unpredictability. This includes knowing how and when to transition back to the office safely, and manage mixed workspaces as some employees continue to work remotely. 

So, what are the current workplace trends, and will there be more changes as we see through the rest of this year and beyond?

1. Virtual Recruiting Is The New Standard

LinkedIn’s Future of Recruiting Report showed 81% of recruiters agree virtual recruiting will continue even after the pandemic. As many as 70% expect it to be the new standard. 

Remote assessments and video interviewing have sparked an end-to-end virtual recruiting process. Based on the findings in Linkedin’s report, a hybrid hiring process will become the norm.

2. Remote Work Is Increasing Access To Talent

Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn Chief Economist, predicts that companies will continue to enjoy the rewards of working with a distributed workforce that has spread skills across the country. They get access to a greater talent pool and can hire across the country as remote work removes the geographical constraints.   

Similarly, employees will pursue opportunities they couldn’t previously access in areas that either held no interest for them or were too high-cost.

3. Employee Wellbeing and Learning Programs Are Tackling Burnout

Data shows that burnout was at an all-time high six months into the pandemic, showing no signs of slowing down. Smart leaders responded to that and continue to do so by abandoning programs and processes that don’t add value. 

Instead, they focus on employee wellbeing and structure work-life by reimagining offices, operating hours, and how technology fits into all of this. 

Another of the workplace trends that is well underway is continued education and learning, evident by a tripling in the number of people spending time on LinkedIn Learning.

4. A Focus On Communities, Collaboration, and Security

Remote work and hybrid office environments create new challenges such as fostering a community and ensuring continued collaboration. To this end, robust technology is needed to enable connection, collaboration, and maintain productivity. 

Organizations also need tools to effectively manage, engage, and provide resources to former and furloughed employees. 

Geoff Belknap, LinkedIn’s Chief Information Security Officer, says companies are working around the loss of the so-called safe zone a corporate network provides. And with the increase in remote work, there is no better time to invest in the distributed workforce’s security through a zero-trust framework.

5. Business Meetings Stay Virtual

In-person meetings have been the norm for decades. But, the pandemic has meant that the adoption of virtual practices is now a strong workplace trend. 

Penry Price, VP of Marketing Solutions for LinkedIn, says we’re in for online-offline hybrids for the foreseeable future.
